Fluvanna County Radio Control Flying Club, Inc. Like most RC clubs today, who had their beginnings from a previous club because of the loss of a flying site, expansion of fliers from other areas, or sometimes just personality conflicts, new clubs are formed This is a natural growth and adds to the size of what Radio Control model flying is today. So it is with the Fluvanna County Radio Control flying Club, Inc., whose very beginnings came from the needs of additional fliers in an area where there were no flying sites and few opportunities for younger participants who might be interested in this great sport of building a model and seeing the culmination of those efforts result in something that not only flies, but can be controlled. We older modelers wanted to the younger generation experience the satisfaction that this great hobby offers. Fluvanna Country, VA, had just embarked on the purchase of approximately 1000 acres of land designated "Pleasant Grove," most of which was not slated for any particular use for some years. Negotiations were held with the County and an area was provided from which we, as a club could fly. On July 9, 1999, several members held a meeting at the site to explore the feasibility of forming a new club. The idea was talked over and a second meeting held September 25, 1999, which resulted in the decision to move forward with a new club. The first official meeting was held at the Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue Building on Jan 30, 2000, with eleven new potential members dedicating themselves to the formation of a new club, which was named "Fluvanna County Radio Control Flying Club," with John Kaiser appointed as the first President; David Beazley as Vice President and Eddie Hammers as Secretary/Treasurer. On February 17, 2000, The Academy of Model Aeronautics issued Club Charter #4113, AMA District IV, to the Fluvanna County Radio Control Flying Club, Inc., the establishment of which is "To unite Radio Control Modelers as an organized group whose objectives shall be to promote interest in Fluvanna County Radio Control Aircraft Modelers in radio control model flying, model aircraft building and training and instruction in model flying." The Pleasant Grove site somewhat limited the flying of larger planes because of nearby trees, so we, like most other clubs were always on the lookout for a larger more open area. The Club has recently realized its dream by being given the opportunity to fly from a recently prepared 50+-acre, treeless flying site. Plans are underway to improve the driveway leading to the actual flying site and to eventually add a concrete take off area and bring in electrical power. Efforts of the FCRCFC, which now consists of approximately 30 members, are underway to build on the club by working with Cub Scouts, church and Soccer groups. We meet the third Thursday of each month at the Lake Monticello Fire & Rescue building. Visitors are welcome. We fly large and small planes (and those in between), both electric and gas as well as helicopters and gliders and welcome all those who have interests that parallel our own. Our field is located at the corner of Routes 647 & 648, just west of Palmyra, VA, so if you're 5 to 85 and would like to operate the Flight Simulator, learn to fly, or just have some fun, bring your wife, your kids, your friends and come on out and join us. You can even join in the soccer being played on the field near us. After all -- it's about having fun. Question or comments can be addressed to the following club officers: Frank Finneran, Ray Muller, Eddie Hammer.
